How Do I Know If I Need One
Like shearling-lined Birkenstocks and children, an air fryer is something you want, not something you need. The only person who needs an air fryer is someone who has no other oven and craves a corn dog. However, if you answer yes to two or more of the following questions, youre a prime candidate for the air-frying lifestyle:
- Do you have counter space for extra kitchen appliances?
- Are you kinda impatient?
- Do you get extremely excited about new kitchen gadgets and just want permission to buy this one?
- Do you want the crispness of fried food without using a deep fryer?
- Do you L-O-V-E roasted vegetables but hate turning on your oven and heating up the whole apartment?
Philips Xxl Hd9630/98 Air Fryer: Best Small Air Fryer
The Philips XXL HD9630/98 Air Fryer is a small air fryer that is a great practical option. It gets its power from the Twin TurboStar convection that circulates heat at a much faster rate. We were impressed with its exceptional crisp results in just half the time of a conventional oven. Its clear this model was designed with practicality in mind. The slide-out basket is convenient for not having to lift out the basket each serving, and all detachable parts are easy to clean and maintain.
It doesnt have all the fancy features like a digital touchscreen or even an on/off switch , but the manual controls are simple and easy to operate. The capacity isnt huge either, so this wouldnt be ideal for a large household, but this perfect for rustling up quick snacks or for a small family.
Best Overall Air Fryer
The Instant Vortex Plus excels in every test, which lands it at the top of the pack as our favorite air fryer in the test suite. It fully delivered, cooking everything to near perfection, producing delectably crunchy onion rings and mouth-watering doughnuts all with a minimal amount of oil. Perhaps most impressively, it achieved an excellent texture and slight crispness when making sweet potato fries which is no easy feat. The Vortex Plus utilizes a smooth tray rather than a fry basket, making the cleaning process much easier. That simplicity extends to the user interface, as it allows for a pleasant user experience via the easy-to-navigate through settings. This machine’s temperature accuracy is near perfect, ensuring we were able to achieve the same results, time after time. True to the Instant brand, this device is multi-functional it can dehydrate, reheat, and do some basic baking.
The Instant Vortex Plus gives us very little to complain about. While we could mention the price, we feel this product’s performance is worthy of the cost. As long as you’re willing to spend a little extra, the Vortex Plus is the best way to satisfy fried food cravings without going overboard on the oil.

Toasting Broiling And Roasting In Air
To test our lineups toasting capabilities, we made single slices of light, medium, and dark toast in each model, as well as a full oven racks worth of medium toast to gauge how evenly its elements heated. One of the models made only very light toast, even on the darkest setting, while others churned out good light and medium toast but incinerated the bread slices on the dark setting. The best models had toast settings that were accuratea light setting that produced light toast, a medium setting that produced medium toast, and a dark setting that produced dark toast.
Here is light, medium, and dark toast made in our least favorite and our favorite air-fryer toaster ovens. Toasters that made toast in a good range of light to dark, with no fiddling required, rated highest.
When we madeWeeknight Roast Chicken in each model, only one oven cooked the chicken to the right temperature within the recipes specified cooking time of 50 to 70 minutes. Most ovens produced underdone, pale chickens, and we found ourselves extending the cooking time by more than 20 minutes to ensure that the chickens were cooked through.

Temperature Accuracy And Consistency Test
This is low-key one of the most important functions for any oven, especially if you plan to do some light baking in it. If an oven can’t hold an accurate and consistent temperature, it makes following recipes far more difficult, and you’ll be forever adjusting and hawking your food to make sure it doesn’t burn. I used thermocouples to read the internal temperature of the oven while it baked for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. I was able to get an average temp reading for the duration of the bake, but I also watched the thermometer in real time to see how much fluctuation happened during the cook.
The KitchenAid won this test with an average reading of 350 F on the nose and with very little fluctuation. The Ninja , Cuisinart and Breville also did well, although the Breville started off very hot and then came back down. The two last-place finishers were the Crux, which ran hot and the Calpahlon, which ran cold . Both were also the most inconsistent throughout the bakes.
Cuisinart Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven: Best Air Fryer Toaster Oven
If youre a fan of rustling up toasted treats, the Cuisinart Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven is ideal. This compact oven can air fry, toast and bake your favorite dishes. Despite its small capacity of 1.2 quart, the Cuisinart Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven has all the features of a full-sized fryer. It quickly heats up thanks to its 1500W power and comes with six convenient functions.
We liked the handy viewing window so you can monitor your cooking progress, and the range of useful features including browning control, a keep warm setting, and a slide-out crumb tray. One downside is it doesnt have an interior light or handles on the pull-out rack so be mindful when handling your hot food.
It also doesnt have digital controls, just simple knobs, which may be disappointing for some. However, it looks sleek, attractive and compact to fit nicely in any space. This may not be ideal if you have a big family, but more suited to a household of two people.

Is Air Frying Healthy
In comparison to deep-fat frying, air frying is a healthier alternative, since using convection cooking rather than oil means less fat in the finished food, which in turn means fewer calories. However, air frying does have some negatives, so it should be considered as part of a balanced diet. Read more about the health credentials of air fryers in our guide is air frying healthy?
Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Air Fryer
Cuisinart was one of the first brands to introduce a toaster oven air fryer that allows you to toast, bake, convection bake, and air fry. We tested the pictured digital version, which not only made the most evenly-colored toast, but also the crispiest air fried food in the shortest amount of time. The rectangular 15.5 by 16-inch air fry rack offers a large cooking surface and sits atop a drip/crumb tray for easy cleanup. Since introducing the toaster oven air fryers, Cuisinart also introduced a smaller version with the same features and quality performance.

What Exactly Is An Air Fryer
If you’re sorta, kinda not sure what an air fryer even is or why they’ve become so popular, let’s start there. The trendy air fryer is a fairly simple cooking machine that employs extremely hot, fast circulating air to flash-roast food inside of a contained frying basket. While there’s generally no or very little oil used, the results can be similar to that of traditional frying in that food comes out crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.

Air fryers heat up fast, cook quickly and make healthier versions of traditionally fatty fried foods, so what’s not to love? But it’s not just healthy versions of bar snacks. I use my air fryer for cooking skin-on chicken thighs to crispy perfection, veggies including mushrooms, pork chops, peppers, onions, and even seafood — namely shrimp, scallops and filets of fish. And because most air fryer baskets are nonstick, cleanup is often as simple as a quick spritz and wipe with a soapy sponge. Many are dishwasher safe too.

Gourmia Digital Air Fryer
If you’re not looking to drop a full Ben Franklin on your air fryer, know that you don’t have to but can still nab a quality air fryer oven for relatively cheap. Of the many we tested, the Gourmia was among the least expensive at under $50 but it performed quite well in most of the tests.
This five-quart oven cooked chicken wings especially well with crispy skin and juicy center, and we found the power nearly on par with the Ninja and Dash ovens. It also made very crispy French fries and toasty mozzarella sticks with a gooey center.
One small drawback for this machine is its slightly clumsy build. The basket didn’t slide into the oven as flush as you might want and that could ultimately lead to problems but it didn’t affect my use of it in any way. This air fryer also has a lot of presets which I don’t generally care for since they don’t account for how much food you’re cooking or the size of, let’s say, a chicken wing or thickness of your French fries. I find it’s always better to use a rough preset recommendation and a lot of progress checking the first few times you cook something. That way you’ll learn about the oven and its power for yourself.
All that said, this 4-quart digital air fryer has a lot of oomph for just $60 and it’s a great size for most kitchens.

Best Air Fryer Overall: Philips Premium Airfryer Xxl
“This air fryer’s large, flat basket was key in producing an even crisp on the food’s surface,” says Johnson. She found that this air fryer from Philips produced the most reliable crisp on both the French fries and the chicken tenders.
It’s extra-large size is perfect for feeding a crowd – Johnson was able to fit 10 to 12 nuggets and two to three servings of fries in the basket. The easy pull-out drawer allowed for smooth and secure motion when checking the food for doneness.
The basket, drawer, and “fat reducer” heat plate are all dishwasher-safe, making for easy cleanup. “This is the most expensive unit, but it was also the most effective,” says Johnson. “This air fryer would be ideal for families with larger kitchens. It would be cumbersome to move from cabinet to counter, so the best case scenario is that it would live on the counter full time.”

Best Countertop Oven And Air Fryer In : Ninja Breville Kitchenaid And More
A proficient countertop toaster oven with capable air fry function is the best of both worlds, and a space-saver to boot.
Improvements to the good old-fashioned oven are never in short supply. Some innovations, like convection cooking, which debuted in 1945, are difficult to imagine living without. Others land softly with an air of frivolousness and very little impact
Smaller countertop ovens are not new, of course, and at this point neither are air fryers. What is new is a fusing of those two types of cookers into one hybrid convection oven with air fryer function, and a good one will do about as much as anything else you can buy for your kitchen. I’ve had one of these versatile hybrid ovens for about a year and find the uses for it many and the results rather delicious.

“But I already have a solo air fryer or was thinking of getting one.” Great! Air fryers are awesome and they’re pretty cheap, too. In fact, we have a list of the best air fryers to help you choose. But the solo units have limitations and those might make a hybrid oven a better option for you. I did the calculations for myself and decided on a hybrid.

How To Choose The Best Air Fryer For You
Air fryers vary in size, shape, capacity and price. The most expensive ones are solidly built, but not necessarily the best at air frying, nor the most convenient to use.
Here are the five things to consider when shopping for an air fryer:
Size: Most air fryers are not only large, but theyre irregularly shaped. Be sure to measure the space on your countertop where you plan to keep your air fryer and the machine itself before making a purchase. Dont forget to check how much room you have from the counter surface to the bottom of your cabinets if you want to be able to move the fryer back and out of the way when youre not using it. If you dont plan on using it often, also consider how heavy the appliance is to see if it will be convenient to lift it in and out of a cabinet or closet.
Capacity: Air fryers are labeled with a wide range of capacities from as little as two quarts to as much as eight. However, the stated capacity is not necessarily a good indication of how much food you can cook at one time. For best results, its not a good idea to pile up food to the top of the basket. Few models can cook more than a pound of food like French fries or veggies at a time. When youre making chicken or hamburgers youre limited to how many pieces you can fit on the bottom of the basket. Its more important to check the diameter of the basket than its volume.
