Air Fryer Baked Potatoes: Perfect Every Time

I cant believe its taken me 10 years of blogging to learn that the very best baked potatoes are air fryer baked potatoes. Heres how to make them with just a few simple steps!

Today, I’m spilling my secret to getting the best baked potatoes ever.

What are the benefits of baking potatoes in an air fryer? The benefits of baking potatoes in an air fryer are a delicious crispy-soft texture and a faster cook time.

This easy, foolproof method will get you those deliciously crispy skins and fluffy insides every time. My perfect baked potatoes can be served as a side dish or the main event, loaded up with some healthy toppings.

Plus, potatoes cook faster in an air fryer than they do in an oven. Baking a potato in the oven takes about an hour. However, an air fryer is essentially a small convection oven, cooking a potato in just 30-40 minutes.

Air fryers also use less energy than your oven. No need to heat up your entire oven space anymore to get perfect fluffy baked potatoes.

Once you try this method, you’ll never go back to regular oven-baked potatoes. Here’s everything you need to know about baking potatoes in an air fryer.

Air Fryer Blooming Baked Potatoes

These Air Fryer Blooming baked potatoes are a showstopping alternative to Air-fried Hasselback potatoes. These bloomers are sliced lengthwise and crosswise, while still attached to the base.

Air-fried to perfection, I love how they get crispy on the outside and fluffy soft in the middle, and the cheesy toppings make them irresistible.

My kids always request Hasselback potatoes. They’re so fun to eat. The potato slices create a lot of surface area for ketchup and other dipping sauces, and the ridges make it easy to grab a little bit of potato with each bite. I came up with the idea of slicing a potato not just crosswise, but lengthwise to create an elegant twist on a classic Hasselbacks.

I named the new dish the Blooming potatoes and it turned into a family favorite in one second.

Toaster Oven Air Fryer Tips

While cooking a whole potato in an air fryer toaster oven takes about the same amount of time there are a few adjustments you might want to make.

Lower The Temperature. For our ovens, lowering the temperature to 375°F helped to keep the potatoes from over-browning before they could cook through the center. If your oven runs hot or the air fry setting is really intense, you may have better results with an even lower temperature like 350°F.

Use a Pan To Catch Drips. The little holes in an air fry basket make it great for circulating heated air around the food and crisping it up. But if youre cooking something that might drip and dont have a pan underneath the basket there is the potential for things to get messy.

One of our air fryers is designed in a way that makes it difficult to use a pan with the basket. To bake potatoes, I like to swap the basket for my trusty quarter sheet pan/wire rack combo. The potatoes bake up nicely without leaving a mess behind to clean up!

Tips For Making Baked Potatoes In The Air Fryer

Healthy Air Fryer Baked Potatoes Recipe The Mom 100
  • Look for potatoes that are similar in size. This will help ensure that they all cook at the same time.
  • Check for doneness with a knife, not a fork. While you can probably poke a fork through the potato easily towards the end of cooking, you want to make sure you can pierce a knife through it instead. Thats what ensures perfectly soft and airy potatoes.
  • Use foil if you want to keep your potatoes warm after cooking. Just place them on a plate and cover them with foil until youre ready to eat. This helps keep the heat in without overcooking the potato.

Tips For The Best Air Fried Baked Potatoes

Jacket Baked Potatoes In An Air Fryer Is It Posible?

You cant go wrong with air fried baked potatoes. The air fryer uses circulating air to cook the potato evenly so there are no hard spots, cold spots or tough skin. It crisps the skins to a crunchy golden brown. The skins are almost better than the insides!

    • Why you poke them: As a potato cooks steam builds up on the inside, and pressure begins to build. When the pressure is stronger than the skin, it can explode. Puncturing the potato prevents the pressure from building up by giving the steam places to escape.
    • Air Fryer: Check your air fryer instructions before cooking. Depending on your air fryer, you may be able to cook up to 4 potatoes at once. Be sure they are spaced evenly so the air can circulate easily.
    • Sizing: Try to keep your potatoes the same size so theyll cook at the same rate.
    • Seasoning: Dont be afraid to season the outside of the potato generously. Add herbs if youd like such as rosemary, dill, or other seasonings.
    • Leftovers: Store leftover potatoes in the fridge. Use leftovers to dice up or shred and pan fry for tasty home hash browns or breakfast hash.

The Last Method I Tested Out Involved Baking The Potato In The Oven

I used a fork to poke 12 holes all over the potato so moisture could escape while it cooked.

Poking the fork in and out of the spud was just as labor-intensive as it was with the microwave method, mainly because the fork kept getting stuck.

Before I placed it in the oven, I coated the potato in oil and salt. Then I cooked it right on the oven rack for an hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
