  • How To Cook A Baked Potato In An Air Fryer

Baked potatoes are such a comfort food for me. Warming, hearty and so delicious! But the one thing I dont like is how darn long an oven baked potato takes to cook. Baking potatoes the old way can take 45 minutes or longer!

Well not any more! The method I am going to show you in this recipe is the quickest way to get a perfect baked potato, with a gorgeously crispy skin, and a fork tender fluffy insides that is just begging to be slathered in butter and devoured.

Air frying is my favorite way to cook potatoes, the action of cooking with hot air gets the outsides so amazingly crispy without needing to bake for close to an hour in a conventional oven.

Air fried baked potatoes can still take a long time to cook through if you just use the air fryer. So I found the best approach is to start the cooking process in the microwave, followed by a blast in the air fryer to crisp it up.

Tip: Start the cooking process in the microwave, followed by a blast in the air fryer to crisp it up.

Some of my other favorite air fryer potato recipes are air fryer roasted potatoes, air fryer baby potatoes, and air fryer smashed potatoes.

Tips For Potatoes In The Air Fryer

    • Test for doneness Your potato is cooked through if a knife inserted into the center is easily pierced. You can easily continue cooking them in the air fryer if they need more time.
    • Scrub potatoes The potato peels are edible and super tasty when you salt them. Just be sure to clean the potato under running water before cooking it.
    • Poke potatoes with a fork air fryer potatoes dont have to be poked with a fork, but there is a small chance your potatoes will burst and make a mess in your air fryer which is why we take 10 seconds to poke the potatoes.
    • Dont overcrowd the air fryer. You want the air to circulate evenly around the potatoes.
    • Reheat the potato by cooking it in the air fryer at 400 until heated or use a microwave.

Air fryer baked potatoes are so satisfying, especially when they are loaded up with all the fixings. Id love to hear about your favorite toppings in the comments.

    The Best Baked Potato Toppings:

    Air Fryer Baked Potato Recipe

In my humble opinion the best approach for baked potato toppings is setting up a salad bar like selection of toppings!

In my potato bar dreams there would be the following options:

    • Bacon
    • Mo butta is mo betta!
    • Brisket
    • Jalapenos
    • Taco meat

Of course, I would never put all these toppings on one potato , but it is nice to have these options for whatever I am in the mood for any given day!

How Long Does It Take To Cook Baked Potatoes In The Air Fryer

For an average-sized baked potato, they should be properly cooked and fluffy in about 30 minutes. However, you may need to adjust this up for down depending on the size of the potatoes you have. The total cook time of this recipe, including preparing the potatoes before and after they have cooked should be about 40 minutes.

How To Bake A Potato In An Air Fryer

How long do you bake baked potatoes? The annoying answer is until they are done! OK so it can be a well educated guess though. I usually bake a medium to large sized potato at 400 for about 40 minutes, with a flip of the potato half way through. That makes the skin nice and crispy all the way around each baked potato. Larger potatoes might take a bit longer.

You can tell when a baked potato is done by pricking it with a fork. It should go in easy and come out easy. If it doesnt do that, cook a bit longer. I like my potatoes to be super soft inside.

How To Cook A Potato In The Air Fryer

A few months ago, we took on the challenge of testing all the ways to make a baked potato in search of a clear winner. We tried the microwave, the grill, and even the slow cooker, but ultimately settled on the oven as our favorite. Many readers, however, pointed out that we hadnt tried the air fryer and if we had, we may have landed on a different winner. So we gave it a go.

After air frying my first batch, I wholeheartedly agree if its crispy skins your after, the air fryer method is far-and-away the winner. Its not any faster than baking a potato in the oven, but its foolproof you get tender, fluffy insides and crisp skins every time. If you own an air fryer, I highly recommend giving it a go, too.

Prepare the potatoes the same way you would for baking: rinse, scrub, and dry them, prick them all over with a fork, drizzle with oil, and season with salt. The recipe below is written for a standard air fryer those in the 3-quart capacity range so it only calls for two potatoes. If youve got a larger capacity air fryer, feel free to double or triple the recipe just make sure that the potatoes have at least an inch between them to guarantee those crispy skins.

How To Make An Air Fryer Baked Potato:

  • Start with russet potatoes they are the must-have potato for classic baked potatoes, but other potatoes cooked in this fashion will still be delicious.
  • Wash and dry potatoes thoroughly potatoes need a good scrub before you consume them, but things that are wet dont crisp up. So we need to wash them well and then dry them thoroughly with a towel.
  • Oil and season while water wont brown, oil is going to give us that incredibly crispy golden skin that cracks when we slice it. Rub the potatoes all over with canola oil and season liberally with salt and pepper.
  • Preheat your air fryer if needed I always set mine to temperature for about 5-8 minutes before I want to put the food in so it goes in hot. We dont want our food to sit in limbo while the air fryer heats up.
  • Cook put the potatoes in the basket, slide it in and cook for about 40 minutes. The exact cook time will depend on the size of your potatoes, but the great thing about the air fryer is that you can pull the basket out and check earlier if your potatoes are small, or you can turn it on for another 5-10 minutes if you find theyre not quite done.
    • Wash and dry potatoes
    • Rub with oil and season
    • Place potatoes in air fryer
    • Finished potatoes with crispy skin

Firstly you need to prick the potatoes evenly all over with a fork. This basically stops your potato from bursting while cooking.

Then add your salt and pepper and other spices to the potatoes and then add a generous amount of olive oil and pour it over your potatoes. Make sure to rub the spices and oil thoroughly into the skin and that all the skin is coated.

This ensures that you get nice crispy skin when they have finished cooking and that the flavor is distributed evenly.

Place them in one layer in your air fryer and air fry at 400 degrees F. You need to flip the potatoes halfway through cooking to ensure crispy skin on both sides and that they are evenly cooked through.

Once your baked potatoes have finished in the air fryer, its time to add the finishing touches to make them irresistible.

Crunchy, Crispy Air Fryer Baked Potato

Your baked potatoes should take just about 40 minutes to cook in the air fryer, but because potato size + air fryer brand will vary, your potatoes may take a little bit more or less time than that. Keep an eye on them at the 35-minute-mark, and if they arent done, continue to check on them every 5 minutes or so, until theyre ready!
